Palakura Pappu – Spinach Dal (thickened soup of lentils and spinach)

 

Ohh I love this dish when my mom makes it, in general I have lots of dal with little rice/chapathi 😀 …my mother reckons this way of eating is healthy as well 😀

 

So my first try [from what I gathered when my mom was cooking] here goes

 

What you need :

 

  • Spinach – a bunch or 1 cup
  • Yellow/red lentils – toor dal – kandi pappu (telugu) – ½ cup [you could add more as well].
  • Green chillies – 3 – 4
  • Tamarind – 1 small grape size roll
  • Turmeric – ¼ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Tadka/Popu ingredients – mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Bengal gram, black gram, Red chillies – (optional) – 1
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Curry leaves – a small stalk
  • Dhania powder and sambar powder – 1 tsp each (optional).
  • Oil – 2 tsp

 

How to do?

 

  • First of all, wash the leaves thoroughly and then cut them into small pieces (you could separate them with stalks if you want but even if you don’t its fine).
  • Take a bowl, put the washed lentils and cut spinach along with ample amount of water * [see bottom for measures].
  • Add the tamarind, turmeric and salt and cook it in a pressure cooker [till 3 whistles, and 5mins in sim flame].
  • If you want you can add tamarind juice [made by soaking tamarind for sometime in water] later on instead of cooking it with lentils and leaves.
  • Take a pan/vessel and add the cooked spinach –lentil mixture to this and cook well under medium flame. You can add salt (if not added more during cooking) at this stage.
  • You can add 1 tsp of sambar/dhania powder if you would like to this (optional)
  • Take a small pan and heat oil.
  • Once oil is heated, add the tadka ingredients and wait for mustards to pop. Take care it does not get charred by stirring/moving them across with a spoon.
  • Add, asafoetida, turmeric and curry leaves during this and add it to the cooked dal. Garnish with coriander and its ready!! 😀

As a deviation :

 

  • You could add onions/tomatoes and cook along with spinach. But its not recommended for people who have it frequently because, spinach with tomatoes might form chemical substances difficult for our kidney system to dispose and so might be a reason (not the only one) to form kidney stones.
  • But once in a while should not be a problem.
