Tomato Pepper Rice

Tomato and Pepper Rice

This is really very simple dish and delicious , takes about 15mins…….Let me tell you how to make it.

I love when my mom makes it, its simple, easy to make and delicious!! I like to sprinkle a bit of sugar on it Ummm Yummy!!

So, i dedicate this to my mother and to participate in the event FIL-Tomato hosted by Sanghi of Sanghi’s Food Delights!


What you need ?

  • Tomatoes – 2 chopped.
  • Green chillies – 2/3 chopped.
  • Peppercorns – ½ tsp or Pepper powder – ½ tsp
  • Coriander – finely chopped to garnish
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 1 ½ tsp
  • Tadka ingredients – 2 tsp

 How you do?

 Cook the rice in a cooker and spread it on a flat surface for drying,

  • Heat the oil in a pan, add tadka ingredients and allow the mustard seeds to pop.
  • Grind the peppers into a coarse powder, in a mortar and pestle.
  • Add green chillies and pepper powder.
  • Add tomatoes now and cook till the raw smell of tomatoes go and add the salt.
  • Now add the cooked rice and mix well.
  • Garnish with coriander and serve hot.


Yummyy!! I loved this one….its a bit different from the simple tomato rice given there are no onions used. In Andhra, we have a telugu calendar month called KARTEEKA MAASAM during DIWALI time and we prefer to avoid onions as much as possible. So this one was developed for one such days 🙂

  2. Wow, I like this simple dish. Can we add onions also if we want to? What is pepper in tamil or telugu? Do we get pepper powder itself in shops?

    But I can’t cook now! I will try it next month. But I will do this if there is no further intervention of destiny!

    @ DI – Onions ya you sure can, but then add little pepper than I wrote here, else it can become too spicy….pepper in telugu is Miriyalu… round stuff….but u can get pepper in the market as powder also…so i suggest buy that!
